The 18th playing of the Solheim Cup is set to begin on Friday, September 22, at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain. Twelve players from the United States and Europe will battle it out over three days of team match-play competition, and the side that earns the most points after the foursomes, fourball and singles sessions will take home the coveted Solheim Cup. Take a look at each of the formats that will be played this week in Spain.
Foursomes
Foursomes matches will be played on both Friday and Saturday morning at Finca Cortesin. Foursomes, also known as alternate shot, is a form of play involving partners where two players compete as a side by playing one ball in alternating order on each hole. One point will be allocated to each team for a win, and a tie will result in each team earning a half point. No points are awarded for losses.
Fourball
Fourball matches will be played on Friday and Saturday afternoon. In fourball, two partners compete together as a side, with each player playing her own ball. A side’s score for a hole is the lower score of the two partners on that hole. The point structure is the same as foursomes, with a win earning one point and a tie earning a half point. No points are awarded for losses.
Singles
Sunday will see all 12 players from both the U.S. and European teams compete head-to-head in singles matches. The point structure remains the same as the first two days – one point for a win, a half point for a tie and no points for a loss.
