University of North Carolina freshman Reagan Southerland made five birdies en route to a 3-under-par 69 and was one of three Tar Heels to shoot below par Friday in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship.
Carolina shot 6-under 282 and is tied for fifth place in the 18-team field after 18 holes at Vanderbilt’s Legends Course in Franklin, Tenn.
Southerland, a native of Alpharetta, Ga., playing in just her second collegiate tournament, is tied for eighth among 96 players. She birdied the second, third and fourth hole to go 3 under then played even par over the final 14 holes.
Senior Crista Izuzquiza shot 2-under 70 and is tied for 15th, sophomore Inez Ng shot 1-under 71, sophomore Megan Streicher finished at even par and fifth-year senior Kayla Smith posted 73.
Auburn leads at 14-under 274, three strokes clear of Arizona State. Vanderbilt is 8 under par, South Carolina is fourth at -7 and the Tar Heels are tied with Ole Miss at 6 under.
Ami Gianchandani of Auburn has the 18-hole lead after shooting an 8-under 64.
Round two is Saturday.
