Duke Duo Leads Europe to 2023 Solheim Cup Victory

Leona Maguire, Celine Boutier

ANDALUCIA, Spain – For the second straight event, the Duke women’s golf tandem of Celine Boutier and Leona Maguire led the Europe squad to a victory at the Solheim Cup at Finca Corstein in Spain.

All tied up, 8-8, heading into the final day of singles action, both teams concluded Sunday’s play with a 14-14 ledger and Europe retained the cup since it had won the previous competition in 2021 in Toledo, Ohio.

It marked the first time in Solheim Cup history that Europe has retained the trophy in three consecutive plays and the first time it finished in a tie, 14-14.

Duke women’s golf was represented in the Solheim Cup for the eighth straight event.  Boutier won the Solheim Cup in her third straight appearance, while Maguire won for the second consecutive time.

A 2016 Blue Devil graduate, Boutier now owns a 5-4-1 ledger in the Solheim Cup, while Maguire moved to 7-2-1 over her short career.

On Sunday, Maguire put the first point on the board for the Europe team with a 4&2 victory over Rose Zhang.

Zhang struck first, carding her first birdie of the day on the opening hole, but Maguire quickly answered with birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 to take control of the match. The two went back-and forth until No. 7, when Maguire took the lead again and only expanded on it from there. She went 2UP, 3UP, then 4UP on holes 12, 13 and 14, before the match ended on 15 when the two halved that hole.

“Suzann handed me a job this morning,” said Maguire. “I knew it was going to be tough. It was going to be a very tough opponent. It was important to get blue on the board early and it’s great.”

Boutier dropped a tight match to Angel Yin, 2&1, on Sunday.

Other Duke golfers who have competed in the Solheim Cup include Boutier (2019, 2021, 2023), Maguire (2021, 2003) and Brittany Lang (2017, 2015, 2013, 2011, 2009).
