Spartans Finish First Two Rounds at Fighting Irish Classic


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a 7-over par 287 in the first round, but struggled in the second round at the Fighting Irish Classic, being played on Notre Dame’s par-70, 7,023-yard Warren Golf Course.

The Spartans are in 14th place among 14 teams at 22-over par 582 (287-295).

Indiana leads the field at 4-under par 556, with Tennessee in second place (even-par 560), Northwestern in third (1-over par 561), host Notre Dame fourth (4-over par 564) and Iowa State rounding out the top-five teams (5-over par 865).

Junior Ashton McCulloch is tied for 27th place to lead the Spartans, standing at 3-over par 143 (68-75). He fired a 2-under par 68 in the opening round.

Senior Bradley Smithson is tied for 49th place at 6-over par 146 (73-73), shooting 3-over par in both rounds.

Graduate Drew Hackett is tied for 56th place at 7-over par 147 (73-74), senior August Meekhof is in 74th place at 11-over par 151 (73-78) and freshman Lorenzo Pinili is tied for 76th place at 13-over par 153 (80-73).

Junior Satchel Pierce, playing as an individual, is tied for 49th place at 6-over par 146 (74-72).

The Spartans will play alongside Georgia Southern and Utah in Monday’s final round.
