Utah Golf’s Barcos Tied for Sixth With Two Rounds Played in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Javier Barcos ended the day with a 2-under 68 and that second-round score allowed him to move into a tie for sixth for the University of Utah men’s golf team, which participated in the first two rounds of the Fighting Irish Classic on Sunday at the Warren Golf Course.

“Javi played really well and is in a great position going into tomorrow’s final round,” said head coach Garrett Clegg. “Sergio had a solid 36 holes and I’m excited to see what everyone brings to the table tomorrow.”

Barcos started the day with an even-par 70 in round one, which he began with a birdie on the par-4 fourth before adding two more over his first nine holes, then concluded the morning with nine straight pars. In the afternoon, the Estella, Spain native added four more birdies, two each on the front and back nine for a 68 that goes down as his lowest round of the 2023-24 season so far. That score enabled Barcos to climb 12 spots up the leaderboard and he’ll enter Monday’s final round just two shots off the lead.

Sergio Jimenez opened the tournament by shooting 1-under through his first 11 holes and, after a few difficult holes in-a-row, he posted two birdies late in the first round to card a 72. He put up a red score four more times in round two to finish one stroke better with a 71 and improve six spots for a share of 27th.

Go Nakatsukasa finished the day with four birdies and is in 62nd. Braxton Watts is tied for 71st, while Brandon Robison owns a share of 79th. As a team, the Utes are 18-over, putting them in 12th.
