JOHNSON, Ark. – The Mississippi State Bulldogs used the unique format of The Blessings Collegiate Invitational to their advantage, as they finished the opening round one-over par and in second place overall.
The Bulldogs played together in a fivesome and strung together low scores on multiple holes as a team. State was able to shoot five-under on the fifth hole, four-under on the tenth hole, and three-under on hole 15. These three holes were crucial to keeping State towards the top of the leaderboard. They trail the hosting Arkansas by four strokes.
In the first round, Mississippi State shot the best of any team on par threes and par fives, as they shot one-over and 13-under combined on those holes, respectively. They also hit three of the four eagles tallied on the course today.
Julia Lopez Ramirez excelled on the back nine to complete her day on the course. After finishing the front half of the course three-over par, Lopez Ramirez strung together a pair of eagles and a birdie to make up four strokes. Julia sits in a tie for fifth place at one-under.
Chiara Horder is tied for seventh place after round one after shooting her best opening round as a Bulldog. She was able to card a trio of birdies on the back nine to secure an even-par finish.
Avery Weed and Samantha Whateley finished tied for 13th. The freshman duo shot a team-high four birdies in the opening round, while Weed also picked up the third Bulldog eagle on hole five.
Jarutrawee Khotchagrai rounded out the lineup for the Bulldogs. JK finished in a tie for 25th as she shot four-over par.
The Bulldogs look to make up ground on the Razorbacks on the second day of The Blessings Collegiate Invitational. The team is set to tee off on the back nine at 9:15 on Tuesday Morning.
