GOLF, Ill. – The No. 17 UCLA women’s golf team tied a 54-hole program record of 32-under 832 to win the Windy City Collegiate Classic at Glen View Club Tuesday afternoon. Three Bruins placed in the top 10, led by Meghan Royal with a runner-up finish.
The performance marked Alicia Um Holmes‘ first win as head coach of the program. Even more impressive, the win came in a stacked field containing nine top 25 teams. The Bruins finished nine strokes ahead of second-place Northwestern.
UCLA recorded rounds of 272-280-280. The Bruins 16-under 272 in round one on Monday was the fourth lowest 18-hole score in program history. All five Bruins shot under par in round one. In total, UCLA’s rotation went 12-for-15 on under par rounds for the tournament.
UCLA’s team score tied the mark it set at the 2018 Golfweek Conference Challenge which featured current LPGA Tour stars Lilia Vu and Patty Tavatanakit.
Royal followed up her first top 20 at the Mason Rudolph Championship with a runner-up finish at 9-under today. The sophomore transfer shot a career low, bogey-free 6-under 66 in round one and was the Bruins’ last golfer to finish round three. Royal’s three birdies on her final four holes brought her to 4-under 68 in round three and helped tie UCLA’s 54-hole record.
Joining Royal in the top 10 were juniors Zoe Antoinette Campos (t-4th, -8) and Caroline Canales (t-8th, -7) who shot under par in all six of their rounds. Campos shot scores of 67-70-71. She signed off on a bogey-free, 5-under 67 in round one and had just three birdies in the entire tournament.
It marked the 10th and 11th top 10 finishes of Campos and Canales’ careers, respectively.
Senior Kate Villegas tied for 14th at 5-under with scores of 68-71-72. Alessia Nobilio tied for 34th at 2-under (71-70-73).
The Bruins are back in action in nine days on Oct. 12 just across Sunset Boulevard to compete in the second annual Battle for the Bell against crosstown rival USC at Bel-Air Country Club. UCLA won the inaugural match, 8.5-3.5.
Bel-Air Country Club played host to the 123rd U.S. Women’s Amateur which Canales competed in. It is also one of the Bruins’ home courses.
