Women's Golf Cards 10-Under Round to End Its Week in Illinois

GOLF, Ill. – Arizona Women’s Golf saved their best for last in Tuesday’s final round of the Windy City Classic, shooting the lowest score in the field at 10-under par. The stellar third round pushed the Wildcats into seventh place for the tournament with a final team score of 18-under. Sophomore Nena Wongthanavimok was Arizona’s top finisher for the event as she ended her week in a tie for 14th at 5-under.

“We played our best round of the season today, and I was proud of how our team came out with a great mindset and executed our gameplan,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “Being able to card the lowest round of the day and shoot 10-under is a testament to our entire lineup who all played terrific golf today. These are the types of rounds that create momentum and give our entire lineup confidence moving forward. There is a lot of positive things that we can take with us from our time in Illinois, and I can’t wait to get this team back out on the course and competing again.”

Tuesday’s third round marked the 14th time in program history the Wildcats have shot 10-under or lower in a single round and the first since shooting 10-under in the second round of last season’s Mason Rudolph Championship. The final round score was also the program’s lowest at the event in 14 appearances, surpassing a 9-under performance in the second round of the 2013 Windy City Collegiate.

All five players in the Arizona lineup broke par in the final round with graduate senior Gile Bite Starkute and sophomore Julia Misemer leading the way with 3-under rounds of 69. The trio of Wongthanavimok, Lilas Pinthier and Carolina Melgrati all carded 2-under rounds of 70.

The Wildcats turned it on after the turn again on Tuesday just as they did in Monday’s afternoon round. Glen View Club’s fourth, fifth and sixth holes were dominated by the Cats who collected a total of seven birdies to just one bogey on those holes that were all par 4’s. Misemer would also lead the way for Arizona to post great scores on the course’s longest holes as she finished the tournament in a tie for second in par-5 scoring at 6-under par.

Arizona will return to action for its third tournament of the fall in two weeks when it returns to the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday, Oct. 20 on the campus of Stanford University.
