Luke Powell Wins First Medal at Hamptons Intercollegiate

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – Freshman Luke Powell on the UCLA men’s golf team won his first collegiate medal in just his second tournament as a Bruin at 17-under at the Hamptons Intercollegiate hosted by Maidstone Golf Club Tuesday afternoon. UCLA finished third as a team at 20-under 843.

Powell’s 17-under (64-67-68) is the second lowest 54-hole score in relation to par in program history. His total score of 199 is tied for the third lowest 54-hole score in program history with Duffy Waldorf’s 14-under 199 at the 1985 Stanford Intercollegiate. Powell’s score was the lowest by a Bruin in 11 years since Pontus Widegren’s 18-under 198 at the 2012 Cal State San Marcos Fall Invitational.

As a team, the Bruins placed four strokes behind champion Alabama at 24-under 840.

Powell has now started his UCLA career with two top 3 finishes and six consecutive rounds under par.

Powell opened round one of the Hamptons Intercollegiate with a bogey-free, 8-under 64. That mark is tied for the seventh lowest 18-hole score in program history and is tied with Patrick Cantlay, Jonathan Garrick and Steve Conway for the lowest 18-hole score by a UCLA freshman.

Powell closed out the tournament with a 5-under 67 and 4-under 68. He recorded 19 total birdies and just two bogeys over the 54 holes. The two bogeys both came in round two.

Omar Morales, who competed as an individual, recorded his third career top 10 finish, tying for fifth at 5-under 211. Morales shot back-to-back 3-under 69s to begin the tournament.

Two more Bruins in Kyle An and Pablo Ereño finished in the top 20. An tied for 11th at 3-under for the best finish of his collegiate career with three steady rounds of 70-72-71. Ereño tied for 13th thanks to a 3-under 69 to bring him to 1-under for the tournament.

Mason Greene tied for 30th (+2) and Luciano Conlan tied for 34th (+6). Conlan’s collegiate debut was highlighted by a 4-under 68 in his second round.
