Marcoux leads Men's Golf to 6th-place finish at Fighting Irish Classic


South Bend, Ind. –The Rutgers men’s golf team wrapped up play at the Fighting Irish Class on Monday afternoon earning their third straight top ten finish as a team. Rutgers finished in sixth place, with a final score of 855 (+15).  
 
As the first day concluded, RU shot nine-over and finished in 12th place out of 14 teams. However, on the tournament’s last day the Scarlet Knights led a remarkable comeback that propelled the team up five places to earn a sixth-place finish. The team shot a score of two-under, which was the third best score of the day.  
 
Xavier Marcoux led the way for RU as he earned his best finish of the year with a tie for 15th place.  He finished with a final score of 211 (-1). Marcoux’s strong start helped Rutgers open the tournament as he managed to make four birdies in the initial 18 holes.
 
Rutgers would boast three players that finished in the top-30 for the first time this season.
 
Weston Jones secured a tied for 26th place with a final score of 3-over. The junior would earn his best finish of the season. He clinched three birdies on his final nine holes to bring him up 11 spots.  

Luke Wells once again secured another top-30 finish as finished tied for 28th place. Impressively, the graduate student achieved a birdie for the second straight tournament in his final round. 

 

Rhett Sellers delivered an impressive performance on Monday as he shot a 1-under on his final round. He secured three eagles on his last 18 rounds to jump up 15 places. The senior concluded the two-day tournament tied for 48th place.  

 

Martin Leon would earn a 78th place finish as he finished with a birdie on his back nine. 

 

The Scarlet Knights would finish with 34 total team birdies including 10 from Marcoux.    

 

The University of Tennessee was crowned the tournament champion as the team produced a final score of 10-under in the final round.  

 

Northwestern’s Ethan Tseng was named the individual tournament champion as he finished with a final score of 8-under.  

 

The Scarlet Knights will travel to Jonesborough, Tennessee for the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate tournament that will be hosted by East Tennessee State University from October 8 through October 10.
