Sampson Zheng has been named Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Week twice in his collegiate career.
Senior Standout Helped Cal Clinch Big Match Victory
BERKELEY – California senior Sampson Zheng was selected as the Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Week by the conference office Tuesday after playing a critical role in the Golden Bears’ 4-3 victory over Stanford in the Big Match last Thursday.
Zheng – playing alongside Cal women’s golfer Rina Tatematsu as the Bears’ No. 1 pairing – defeated Stanford’s Karl Vilips and Rachel Heck 2&1 in the unique event that featured seven mixed pairs from each rival school competing in a better ball match play format. Zheng, a 2023 All-American, tallied seven birdies across 17 holes played and won three holes for the Bears, including 1 and 2 to establish an early advantage. His birdie on the par-4 hole 15 gave him and Tatematsu a 3-up lead that they held onto for the match-clinching win.
Zheng is the second Bear to earn the Pac-12’s weekly honor this season, joining freshman Eric Lee, who was named the Co-Pac-12 Golfer of the Week on Sept. 12 following a medalist performance in his collegiate debut at the Marquette Intercollegiate. Zheng received the conference’s weekly honor once last season on the way to All-Pac-12 First-Team recognition.
The Bears are back on the course next week as they host the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club in Fairfax on Oct. 9-10.
