Four of the top-20 teams in Golfweek’s men’s college rankings headline the 10-team field at the third Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf, which will be played Monday and Tuesday, October 9-10, at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
The tournament, hosted by the University of North Carolina, honors former UNC men’s basketball coach Roy Williams and his wife, Wanda, for their longtime support of student- athletes and college golf.
Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the country in the coaches’ poll and No. 2 by Golfweek, has won the tournament the last two seasons.
This year’s field includes Auburn (Golfweek’s No. 1-ranked team), No. 6 Arizona State, No. 17 and defending NCAA champion Florida, Elon, Louisville, Missouri, NC State, UNCW and North Florida.
Play begins Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
The Tar Heels won the team title at Eagle Point two years ago at 17-under 847. Last year, no team finished under par as Carolina won at 3 over.
First-team All-America David Ford has earned a pair of second-place finishes in the Williams Cup. He shot 9-under 207 as a freshman and 2-under 214 a year ago.
Carolina’s lineup for the 2023 Williams Cup includes David Ford, Maxwell Ford, Austin Greaser, Dylan Menante and Kenan Poole.
Also, Peter Fountain, Nanu Mohan, Hampton Roberts and Ryan Smith will compete as individual entries.
The Tar Heels have won the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational and finished one stroke back of Vanderbilt in second place at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in their two starts this fall.
