Powell Named Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Week


LOS ANGELES – Freshman Luke Powell on the UCLA men’s golf team was named Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Week, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
 
Powell won his first medal as a Bruin in just his second collegiate tournament on Oct. 3 at the Hamptons Intercollegiate with a score of 17-under 199 (64-67-68). Powell’s 54-hole score was the second lowest in relation to par in program history. His total score of 199 is tied for the third lowest 54-hole score in program history and was the lowest by a Bruin in 11 years.
 
Powell’s bogey-free 8-under 64 in round one is tied for the seventh lowest 18-hole score in UCLA history and is tied with Patrick Cantlay, Jonathan Garrick and Steve Conway for the lowest by a Bruin freshman. He finished the tournament with two more rounds in the 60s, recording 19 total birdies and just two bogeys over the 54 holes. Powell has now opened his collegiate career with six consecutive under par rounds for a combined 27-under.
 
Powell, a native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., prepped at Capistrano Valley Christian Schools where he the captured both the 2023 CIF State Championship and 2023 CIF Southern Section Individual Regional title.
