BILOXI, Miss. – No. 10/23 Mississippi State torched a difficult course at the Fallen Oak Collegiate on Sunday afternoon, shooting 12-under as a team to lead the field. Only No. 1 Auburn joined MSU under par as a team, and the Bulldogs have a six-stroke lead after the first round.
Hunter Logan is second at five-under after carding five birdies on the front nine. Josep Serra and Pedro Cruz Silva were also among the top 10, and Harrison Davis landed in a tie for 12th.
“It was a good start for our team,” head coach Dusty Smith said. “We handled the conditions very well and played disciplined golf. I’m just really proud of all of our guys and their commitment to the gameplan today. We know there is a lot of golf still to play, but we look forward to our opportunity in tomorrow’s round.”
Logan started strong with birdies on four of his first five holes. He added two more on Nos. 9 and 18. The 67 is his seventh par or better round of the year and his sixth in the 60s. He has now shot 60 career par or better rounds and is the third Bulldog to reach the milestone in program history.
Serra carded three birdies on the front nine but sat just one-under at the turn. He responded with a birdie on No. 10 and an eagle on No. 13 to get to four-under and is tied for third through 18 holes. Cruz Silva also shot an eagle on No. 13 and finished the day two-under in a tie for sixth. The pair have both shot five rounds of par or better this season.
Davis took the opposite approach to Logan, Despite opening the day with a birdie, Davis was one-over at the turn. He birdied three holes on the back nine to finish under par. The team total of 276 is tied for the seventh-lowest opening round in program history and MSU’s third opening round in the top 10 this year
Alejandro Fierro made his collegiate debut as an individual and shot his first career birdie on the 11th tee.
