Blue Devils Shoot 2-Under Again at Landfall Tradition


WILMINGTON, N.C. – For the second straight day, the Duke women’s golf team turned in a 2-under-par, 286, and enters the final round of the Landfall Tradition in striking distance at the 6,194-yard, par-72 Country Club of Landfall Pete Dye Course in Wilmington, N.C.

The Blue Devils currently sit in sixth place with a 4-under, 572, and only four shots off the lead with 18 holes remaining.  Arizona (568) leads with Tennessee (569), UCF (570), Michigan State (570), Clemson (571) and Duke (572) rounding out the top six.  

How It Happened

•    Senior Phoebe Brinker carded her second straight round of under-par as she posted a 2-under, 70.  She is currently tied for sixth with a 3-under, 141.  Brinker, who is from Wilmington, Del., opened Saturday’s play by hitting her 54-degree wedge from 85 yards to six feet and sank the birdie.  She moved to 2-under as she 2-putted for birdie on the par-5 sixth hole.  Brinker bogeyed No. 7 and No. 9 and made the turn at even-par, 36.  She parred the first six holes on the back nine and then chipped in for birdie on No. 16 to return to the red numbers.  Brinker once again was on the par-5 green in two on No. 18 and birdied to finish with a 70.  

•    With an 1-under-par, 71, senior Anne Chen moved up to a tie for 32nd place.  After a bogey on No. 1, the Sugar Land, Texas, product got hot with three birdies over a span of six holes.  Chen hit her 50-degree wedge from 100 yards to three feet on No. 2, 2-putted for birdie on the par-5 sixth hole and hit her 60-degree wedge from 71 yards to nine feet on No. 7.  She made the turn with a 2-under, 34, and opened the back nine with five consecutive pars.  Chen bogeyed No. 15 and No. 16 to return to even par, but came back to hit her pitching wedge from 110 yards to four feet for birdie on No. 17, before closing with a par.  

•    Freshman Katie Li collected her second straight even-par, 72, as she hit 12 fairways and 12 greens.  After three pars, Li moved to 1-under as she drained a 10-footer for birdie on the 511-yard, par-4 fourth hole.  She bogeyed No. 7 and made the turn at even-par, 36.  Li stuck her approach on No. 10 to three feet from 77 yards for birdie to return to 1-under.  She parred five straight and then suffered a double-bogey on No. 16.  Li hit the par-5 18th green in two from 198…
