Mathews cards final-round 67 to cap Hokies' fantastic fall


WILMINGTON, N.C.Emily Mathews carded a season-best, 5-under 67 in the final round of the Landfall Tradition to tie for 13th and pace Virginia Tech to an eighth-place showing Sunday at Country Club of Landfall.

Behind 11 birdies, including six in the final round, Mathews surged up the leaderboard to post her third top 20 in four outings. On Sunday, the Mebane, N.C., native carded six birdies over an eight-hole stretch for her fifth par-or-better round of the season. The freshman finished at 4-under 212 (73-72-67).

Two strokes behind were Morgan Ketchum and Valentine Delon, who concluded play at 2-under 214. Delon was fourth in par-3 scoring at 3-under for the tournament. Becca DiNunzio led the Hokies with 12 birdies for the event.

Duke and Clemson tied atop the team standings at 21-under 843. The Blue Devils won the tiebreaker thanks to their fifth player’s score. UCF was third at 20-under 844.

Furman’s Anna Morgan rolled to the individual title, firing rounds of 67, 66 and 69 to sign for a 14-under 202 and a 5-shot victory.

The Hokies will now enjoy a break before returning to action in the spring at the UCF Challenge, Feb. 4-6, in Orlando, Fla.
