#6 Vols Complete Day One At Cypress Point Classic


MONTEREY, Calif. – The No. 6 Tennessee men’s golf team completed two rounds at the Cypress Point Classic Monday, defeating No. 18 Illinois in round one, and falling short to No. 4 Arizona State in round two.

Despite dropping its match 2.5-.5 to the Sun Devils, the Vols advanced to the semifinals after defeating the Fighting Illini in the opening round, 2-1.

The Big Orange will tee off against Pepperdine Tuesday— with the winner clinching third place.

Round one (fourball matches)

Tennessee 2, Illinois 1

Evan Woosley-Reed and Lance Simpson secured the first point against Illinois Monday after defeating Timmy Crawford and Piercen Hunt 3&1. The duo came back from a two-hole deficit and clinched the match on their 17th hole.

Bryce Lewis and Jake Hall clinched the match win for Tennessee after defeating Max Herendeen and Ryan Voois 1up. The pair birdied their 17th hole to go one up and secured the point on the final hole.

Caleb Surratt and Josh Hill were defeated by Jackson Buchanan and Ethan Wilson.The twosome had the match tied through 12 holes but could not hold on and fell 3&1.

Semifinals

Arizona State 2.5, Tennessee .5

Hall and Lewis were the only pair to avoid defeat in the semifinals. The redshirt seniors split their fourball match against Luke Potter and Connor Williams to earn half a point.

Woosley-Reed and Simpson suffered a narrow defeat, losing 1up to Nick Prieto and Ryggs Johnston. Despite the loss, Woosley-Reed and Simpson put up a strong fight until the final hole.

Surratt and Hill lost their fourball match 5&4—which clinched the semifinal win for Arizona State.
