PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Stanford split a pair of matches to kick off the Cypress Point Classic on Monday, falling to second-seeded Arizona State in the opening round before defeating Illinois in the consolation semifinals to close out the day.
In the opening round foursomes format, Stanford fell 2-1 the fourth-ranked Sun Devils. Barclay Brown and Ethan Gao were the Cardinal’s lone victorious pairing in the matchup, earning the 3&2 win, but Arizona State scored the next two matches against the pairings of to knock Stanford to the consolation side.
Moving to round two in the fourball format, Stanford won via tiebreaker over the No. 18 Fighting Illini as the as the two teams each won one match a piece, but the Cardinal led the way in most holes won. Karl Vilips and Kush Arora won 4&2 in their match, securing the four-hole lead that helped push the Cardinal through to the next round.
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s action, Stanford will compete in singles play against Auburn in the fifth-place match. Texas and Arizona State will compete for the Cypress Point championship.
