Virginia Men's Golf | UVA Golf Signs Spaniard Maxi Puregger

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent announced today (Nov. 8) that Maximilian “Maxi” Puregger has signed a national letter of intent and will enroll and begin competing for the Cavaliers this fall. Puregger is from Madrid, Spain.

This year Puregger won the Austrian Match Play championship and finished first at the Campeonato Abierto de Madrid Masculino Sub-25 tournament. He was the runner-up at Campeonato Individual Masculino RSHECC.

“Maxi is a good international player with a lot of experience in Europe and we’re thrilled to have him join our program,” Sargent said. “On the golf side, Maxi is a powerful player with a lot of speed, as his game grows inside 100 yards he will only get better. We’re looking forward to working with Maxi the next four years as he achieves his goals in the classroom, as a collegiate player and ultimately a professional golfer.”

During 2023 season he has posted top-10 finishes at five other European amateur events. He also played in the 2023 R&A Boys Amateur.

During his amateur career, Puregger has won the Austrian Boys Under-16 title and the Madrid Under-16, 18 and 25 titles. He was the French Boys stroke play champion, the Barcelona Under-18 champion and won the European Boys Division 2 team championship.

Puregger’s mother, Iidiko Guba, was a four-time letterwinner on the Nebraska women’s tennis team from 1988 to 1991.
