Men’s Golf Signs Talented Trio

Incoming Class To Join Golden Bears In Fall 2024

BERKELEY – The California men’s golf program signed three future Golden Bears to National Letters of Intent last week, Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf Walter Chun announced Monday. Kai Hirayama, Matthew Miyamoto and Ziqin (Eric) Zhou will arrived in Bear Territory ahead of Cal’s 2024-25 campaign.
 
“Coach (Peter) Ireland and I are grateful that Kai, Matthew and Ziqin have chosen Cal as the place where they want to further advance their golf careers and their academics,” Chun said. “They each have high aspirations, are tireless workers and love to compete. Those attributes fit the Cal Golf mold. We are fortunate to have these outstanding young men joining the program next fall.”
 
Kai Hirayama – Arcadia, California

  • Junior Golf Scoreboard Ranking: No. 76 in class of 2024 / No. 133 overall
  • AJGA Ranking: 197
  • 2022 Toyota Tour Cup Player of the Year
  • 2022 All-Southern California Team Award
  • Won the 2021 AJGA Junior at Peach Tree (68-66-69)
  • Qualified for the 2022 USGA Amateur Championship
  • Eight top-10 finishes on the AJGA circuit

 
Matthew Miyamoto – Sacramento, California

  • AJGA Ranking: 275
  • 2023 IMG Junior World Medalist (68) at Haggin Oaks
  • 2023 California State Amateur participant at Lake Merced Golf Club
  • Recorded four top-15 finishes in 2023 AJGA events
  • Delta League Most Valuable Player (Jesuit High School)
  • Two-time All-Delta League selection

 
Ziqin (Eric) Zhou – Shenzhen, China

  • World Amateur Golf Ranking: 109
  • No. 16-ranked signee in the class of 2024 (Golf Channel)
  • Two-time representative for China at the World Amateur Team Championship
  • Two top-25 finishes at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, including a tie for 24th in the 2023 edition at Royal Melbourne Golf Club on Oct. 3-6
  • Six top-3 finishes on the CLPGQ Professional Golf Tour in China
  • Won the 2022 CGA Championship on the China Professional Golf Tour (68-69-64-69)
  • Qualified for the 2022 USGA Junior Amateur Championship
