Cal Places Ninth In First Spring Tournament
WESTLAKE VILLAGE – Ethan Fang birded four of his final seven holes to finish under par for the third consecutive day and earn a top-10 individual finish, highlighting the California men’s golf team’s performance at the Southwestern Invitational on Wednesday.
Fang, who shot a 3-under-par 68 in the third round, finished the tournament at 5-under in a tie for ninth place. He was closely followed by Aaron Du, who despite going 2-over on Wednesday, finished in a tie for 13th at 3-under for the event. The Golden Bears finished in ninth as a team with an even-par 852 following a third-round 286.
Ohio State (-13) swept the team title and individual medalist honors, with Neal Shipley (-12) topping the leaderboard. UNLV (-12), UCLA (-9), San Diego State (-9) and Washington (-8) rounded out the top five in the team standings.
Fang entered the back nine at 1-over on the day after going bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey on holes 3-7, but the freshman finished strong with additional birdies on holes 12, 14, 15 and 18. Tony Chen, who tied for 23rd at 1-over for the tournament, carded an eagle on hole 6 Wednesday.
