Virginia Athletics | Virginia and Sambach Finish Second at San Diego State Classic

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The No. 25 Virginia women’s golf team placed second at the San Diego State Classic at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., one shot behind tournament champions South Carolina. UVA shot 10-over 298 during the final round to end the 54-hole competition at 17-over 881.

All-American Amanda Sambach paced Virginia with a runner-up finish. Her final-round of 1-under 71 put her at 5-under 211 for the tournament. Oregon’s Kiara Romero took medalist honors at 9-under 207. It was the fifth time in six tournaments this season that Sambach produced a top-10 finish. She entered the competition ranked No. 7 in the NCAA individual rankings. It was the 16th top-10 outing in Sambach’s career.

Sambach was joined in the top 10 by teammate Megan Propeck who shot 3-over 219 to finish seventh. That was her best tournament showing as a collegiate. Propeck posted a final-round score of 2-over 74.

Freshman Jaclyn LaHa was 21st at 10-over 226. She shot 78 during the final round. Celeste Valinho was 24th at 227 and Rebecca Skoler was 28th at 229. Valinho completed play with a score of 75 while Valinho shot 78 on Tuesday.

UVA is off until the Cavaliers travel to Las Vegas for The Show tournament at Spanish Trail Golf Club on March 4-5.
