CLEMSON, S.C. — Thomas Higgins fired a five-under-par 67 and Kian Rose added a four-under-par 68 on Tuesday to lead Clemson to a 280-team score and a second-place standing after two rounds of the Watersound Invitational at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club in Panama City, Fla. The 12-team tournament that features six of the top 20 teams in the nation will conclude on Wednesday.
Third-ranked Vanderbilt owns a seven-shot lead over the Tigers with a 20-under-par score of 556. The Tigers have a 36-hole score of 563, while 10th ranked Virginia is third at 564 and 13th ranked Florida State is fourth at 567. Georgia Tech, ranked 12th in the nation, is fifth at 568. The field includes six of the top 20 teams in the nation.
Higgins and Jonathan Nielsen stand in a tie for fifth after 36 holes with identical scores of 139. Higgins had a 67 in the second round thanks to four birdies, an eagle and a bogey. His eagle took place on the par five 13th hole that measures 533 yards. Through two rounds Higgins, who finished fourth at Briar’s Creek last week, is first in the field of 75 golfers in par five scoring with a -7 aggregate.
Nielsen, Clemson’s scoring average leader for the season, had a second round 70 after a first round 69. He had just one bogey in the second round.
Rose had a second-round 68 that included nine hole scores of 33-35. His only blemish in the second round was a bogey on the par three 11th holes that measures 209 yards. Rose stands in a tie for ninth after two rounds thanks to scores of 72-68.
Alberto Dominquez was Clemson’s fourth counting score on Tuesday as he shot a three over par 75. Andrew Swanson was the non-counter with a 77.
One of the keys to Clemson’s performance so far has been a 3.96 team average on par four holes, best in the field.
Calahan Keever is playing the tournament as an individual and has rounds of 75-78 so far. His 153 score is 69th.
Clemson will be paired with Vanderbilt and Virginia tomorrow and will begin play at 9:50 a.m. Eastern time. Live scoring is available on golfstat.com.
