HUMBLE, Texas – The Illinois women’s golf team ended the first day of The Chevron Collegiate tied for sixth after carding a 36-hole team total of 565 (-11).
Isabel Sy ended the day tied for fourth at 8-under overall, one stroke off of the lead. Sy carded a 1-under 71 in the opening round before firing a 7-under 65 in the second round to move up 28 spots on the leaderboard. The senior went bogey-free on her second 18 of the day, tallying seven birdies. Sy is tied for the lowest par 4 scoring in the tournament (3.65, -7) and her 11 total birdies are tied for third-most among the field. The San Gabriel, Calif., native now has two of the four lowest single-round scores in program history and is hunting for her fifth-straight Top 5 finish.
Yurang Li, competing in her second-career event, also finds herself in the Top 25 after posting rounds of 68 (-4) and 72 (E). During her career-low first round, Li went bogey-free, carding two birdies and an eagle on No. 13. The freshman then carded four birdies during her second round to give her a tournament total of six. Li also totaled 25 pars during the 36 holes of play, one of 11 players to reach that mark.
Erica Lee is tied for 42nd after back-to-back rounds of even par. Lee had a scoring average of 2.63 (-3) on par 3s, tied for the lowest average among the field.
Lexanne Halama is tied for 57th after rounds of 71 (-1) and 76 (+4). Halama amassed five birdies in the first round and six in the second round, five of which came on the back nine. The junior’s 11 birdies are tied for third-most among the field.
Anna Ritter is tied for 60th after consecutive rounds of 74 (+2). Ritter collected 29 pars, tied for second most in the tournament.
Texas A&M leads all teams at 23-under (553), with Maryland’s Nicha Kanpai and Patrice Mackova, and the Aggies’ Adela Cernousek all tied for the individual lead at 9-under.
The Fighting Illini will be back in action for tomorrow’s final round with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. CT.
