RICHMOND HILLS, Ga. – Three Utes have claimed spots inside the top 10, including Javier Barcos leading the way for the Utah lineup at 3-under, and the University of Utah men’s golf team is tied for fourth following the conclusion of the first day of play at the Invitational at the Ford at the Ford Field and River Club in Richmond Hills, Ga.
“We played well today,” said coach Garrett Clegg, “we just didn’t play the par 5’s at the level we could play them. The golf course is amazing and you need to take advantage of the par-5’s and we have been outstanding everywhere but on them. Tomorrow the wind is forecasted to be 15-20 mph, so it should be a tough day and I’m excited to see how we compete!”
Barcos spent the morning putting together a 2-under 70, then continued his solid play in round two. The Estella, Spain native rattled off eight consecutive pars on the front nine before recording a birdie on the par-5 ninth. He added one more red score on the back nine to finish 1-under and put his mark for the day at 3-under, placing him in a tie for 10th.
Sergio Jimenez will enter the final day of the tournament sharing 24th following back-to-back 72’s that leave him at even-par. He had his best stretch of the day on the back nine of the second round, shooting 2-under and collecting three birdies. One stroke behind Jimenez is Braxton Watts, who carded a round one 70 before concluding the day 1-over and deadlocked with five other golfers in 26th.
Go Nakatsukasa is 2-over and tied for 32nd, while Gabriel Palacios is even with six players in 35th.
Brandon Robison and Davis Johnson spent the day playing as individuals and both joined Barcos in the top 10. Robison shot a round one 69 and followed it by logging three more birdies over 14 holes in round two to move into a tie for fifth. Davis Johnson was tied for 20th after his first 18 holes, then shot 3-under in the evening before play was suspended, allowing him to join Barcos in 10th.
