Sam Harrop writes clever song poking fun at Talor Gooch, Rory McIlroy

Sam Harrop has done it again.

The witty lyricist has made quick work of the Talor Gooch-Rory McIlroy flap.

To recap: Gooch stated an opinion about McIlroy’s quest for the career grand slam, saying:

“If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his (career) grand slam without some of the best players in the world, there’s just going to be an asterisk. It’s just the reality,” Gooch told Australian Golf Digest. “I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there.”

McIlroy was asked to respond and he did, quite cordially:

“I feel like whoever did the interview led him down that path to say that, so I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt there a little bit. He just agreed with what the interviewer asked.”

Musician and golf fan Sam Harrop, who has written jingles about Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau in the past, quickly went to work and crafted a little ditty called “Asterisk,” saying Gooch “gave us maybe the quote of the year.”

That Gooch line is a good one but the best line in the new song might be: “Greg tells me he’s still on the case,” in regards to Greg Norman chasing Official World Golf Ranking points for his LIV golfers.
