Wildcats Head to the Swamp for Gators Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – For a second time in three tournaments, No. 17 Arizona Women’s Golf will have to move its schedule up due to inclement weather forecasts. The Wildcats will begin play in the Gators Invitational on Friday, March 1, which was originally scheduled to be the practice round day for the event. Arizona faced similar challenges at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge earlier this month in Southern California before picking up match play wins over a pair of top-25 programs in rainy conditions.

“We have played great golf as a team in all three of our events so far in 2024, and we have shown improvement along the way,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “That positive momentum, mixed with good course knowledge from playing in this event a year ago, makes this a very exciting opportunity for our team to go out and compete at a high level. Weather conditions will create some challenges and adversity for us, but our young ladies see those challenges as opportunities.”

Arizona is coming off a third place showing at the annual Pac-12 Preview in Hawai’i where the team overcame challenging wind and course conditions to place two golfers in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard. Gile Bite Starkute and Carolina Melgrati both finished tied for sixth at 3-under par for the event.

The Cats battled rainy conditions in last year’s Gators Invitational that was shortened to just 36 holes. Arizona finished in fifth place as a team at 18-over with Starkute leading the Cats with a fifth-place finish at even par.

The altered schedule for the 2024 Gators Invitational will be to complete 36 holes on the first day before seeing if weather will permit additional rounds over the weekend. The event is held at the Mark Bostick Golf Course, which is located on the campus of the University of Florida. It will play as a Par 70 this weekend with a length of 6,002 yards.
