Spartans in Fifth Place at Colleton River Collegiate


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team is in fifth place among 14 teams after the first day of play at the 12th annual Colleton River Collegiate, being hosted by the Spartans at the Colleton River Club in Bluffton, S.C.

Play was suspended late in the second round due to darkness.

The 14-team field, which includes six teams ranked among the top-75 in the country by the NCAA, will complete the second round on Tuesday morning before turning around to play the final 18 holes.

The Spartans fired a 9-under par 279 in the first round and were in third place and stand in fifth place at 15-under par through 13 holes.

Defending champion Georgia Southern leads the field at 24-under par, seven shots ahead of Minnesota, Chattanooga and Missouri, who are all tied for second place at 17-under par.  MSU round out the top-five teams in the field, with Indiana four shots back in sixth place at 11-under par.

Graduate students Drew Hackett is tied for the individual lead at 8-under par, sharing the lead with Cincinnati’s Ryan Ford and Reece Coleman and Brycen Jones from Georgia Southern. Hackett fired a 5-under par 67 in the opening round, posting six birdies over the first 18 holes. The graduate had four birdies over the first 13 holes and was 3-under par before the round was halted.

Senior Bradley Smithson is tied for 14th place at 4-under par, including a 2-under par 70 in the first round. Smithson was at 2-under par through 14 holes.

Freshman Lorenzo Pinili is tied for 26th place at 2-under par. Pinili shot an even-par 72 in the first round and had three birdies and was at 2-under par through 15 holes.

Junior Ashton McCulloch is tied for 37th place at 1-under par, carding a 2-under par 70 over the opening 18 and was at 1-over par through 14 holes.

Freshman Lucas Acevedo shot an even-par 72 in the first round and was 1-over par through 14 holes and is tied for 50th place at 1-over par.

Playing as an individual, senior August Meekhof is tied for 19th place at 3-under par, firing a 3-under par 69 in the opening round before finishing 16 holes at even-par in the second round.
