HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Duke women’s golf team carded a 3-under-par, 281, on Monday in the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the 6,369-yard, par-71, Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
The Blue Devils sit tied for second overall as all five Duke golfers shot even par or better, led by sophomore Andie Smith’s 2-under-par, 69.
How It Happened
- Boosted by a team-best five birdies on the day, sophomore Andie Smith led the Blue Devils with a 2-under, 69, and is tied for seventh overall through 18 holes.She kicked off her day with three birdies over her first five holes and led the field.Smith, a product of Hobe Sound, Fla., got things started on No. 2 as she hit her 6-iron from 161 yards to eight feet for birdie.She then drained a 6-foot birdie on No. 4 and a 20-footer for birdie on No. 5 to get to 3-under.After a bogey on No. 6, Smith hit her 9-iron from 137 yards on the eighth hole to 10 feet and sank another birdie.She suffered a bogey on No. 11, but quickly got to 4-under-par with an 8-foot birdie and 4-foot birdie on holes No. 12 and No. 13, respectively.Smith closed the day with three pars and two bogeys to finish with a 69.
- With a 1-under-par, 70, senior Anne Chen is tied for 15th overall.She opened her day with a 1-under-par, 35, on the front nine with birdies on No. 3 and No. 8.Chen, a product of Sugar Land, Texas, hit a half 50-degree wedge from 96 yards in the fairway bunker to 14 feet for birdie on No. 3.She also hit her 8-iron on No. 8 from 137 yards that hit the left side of the green and eventually settled to four feet from the cup for birdie.On the back nine, Chen shot even par with five pars, two birdies and two bogeys.She rolled in a 13-footer for birdie on No. 13 and an 11-footer on No. 17.
- Graduate student Emma McMyler opened her day with three pars, before suffering a bogey on No. 4.She came back on the par-5 sixth hole and hit her approach from 84 yards to nine feet for birdie to get back to even.McMyler, who is from San Antonio, Texas, dropped a shot on No. 8, but went on to close her day with a 1-under-par score over her final 10 holes.She notched her second birdie of the afternoon on No. 12 as she rolled in a 12-footer to finish with an even-par, 71.
