Clemson, SC—Alberto Dominquez fired an even par 70 in his second round on Monday to lead Clemson to a tie for fourth place after two rounds of the Wake Forest Invitational at famed Pinehurst #2 in Pinehurst, NC. The 12 teams in the field will conclude the tournament on Tuesday at the site of the 2024 United States Open.
East Tennessee State leads the field of ACC, SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 teams by two shots over Wake Forest. The Bucs have a 568 total after 36 holes, followed the the Demon Deacons 570 score. Auburn is third at 573, while Clemson and Northwestern are tied for fourth at 574.
Clemson is just six shots off the lead as they attempt to win this tournament for the second time in the last three years. Clemson won the event with an 18 over par score in 2022.
Clemson held the team lead after the first round with a 284 score, but had a team score of 290 in the second round. All four Clemson counting scores in the first round were 72 or better when the stroke average for the 66 players in the field was 73.42.
Dominquez was Clemson’s most consistent golfer during the long day of 36 holes on the difficult par 70 course that is playing to 7146 yards for these college players. The Clemson senior had rounds of 72 and 70 on Monday and his 142 total stands in eighth place entering Tuesday’s final round. The native of Spain played the par three holes at a 2.75 average, tied for second best in the field.
Jonathan Nielsen, Clemson’s best golfer in terms of stroke average entering the tournament, had rounds of 70 and 73 and his 143 total stands in 14th place. The senior from Denmark is attempting to record his fourth Top 10 finish of the year.
Andrew Swanson and Kian Rose both had rounds of 71 and 75 on Monday and are tied for 27th with a 146 total through 36 holes. Sophomore Thomas Higgins recorded rounds of 78 and 72 on Monday and his 150 total os tied for 49th.
Freshman Will Baker is playing as an individual and had rounds of 79 and 72.
