Bears Had Moved Up 5 Spots Prior To Tournament’s Suspension
FAIRFAX – The No. 25 California women’s golf team was in the midst of another remarkable finish Tuesday at Meadow Club, but despite being midway through the Juli Inkster Invitational’s final back nine, the last 18 holes were canceled due to inclement weather.
Prior to the tournament’s suspension, Cal had risen five spots from 10th to fifth place on the team leaderboard with four Golden Bears sitting in the top 30 individually. Instead, all 14 teams were moved back to where they stood following round two, officially giving Cal a 13-over par 589 team score and 10th-place final standing.
Freshman Constance Fouillet (72-72) had remained in the top 15 throughout the day, with two early birdies putting her at 1-under par through her first seven rounds. She finished as the Bears’ leader for the fourth time in seven tournaments this season, totaling an even-par 144 to tie for 15th place.
Seniors Cristina Ochoa and Rina Tatematsu and sophomore Adora Liu were all placed in the top-20 to 30 range before play was halted. Ochoa (75-72 – 147) finished in 27th place, while Liu (77-72) and Tatematsu (73-77) ended in 42nd and 48th, respectively.
All season long, the Bears have made it a habit to finish tournaments strong. They shot 9-under in the last round of their record-breaking victory at the Molly Invitational on Sept. 26. That started an incredible run of final rounds that also saw them overcome a 13-stroke final-day deficit to win the Ron Moore Intercollegiate and move up six spots to close the Stanford Intercollegiate in successive competitions.
Cal won’t return to action for more than three weeks, resuming its spring season on March 28-30 at the PING/ASU Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona.
Tough way for the Bears to end the Juli Inkster Invitational.
