Men’s Golf Finishes in Fifth Place at Colleton River Collegiate


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a 1-under par 287 in the final round and finished in a tie for fifth place among 14 teams at the Colleton River Collegiate, hosted by the Spartans at the Colleton River Club in Bluffton, S.C.
The Spartans completed the second round of play on Tuesday morning after the first day of play was halted on Monday due to darkness.

MSU finished the tournament at 19-under par 845 (279-279-287).

Final Results

Georgia Southern won the team title for the second-straight year, firing a 32-under par 832 to finish two strokes ahead of Chattanooga (30-under par 834). Rutgers placed third (23-under par 841), with Kansas State fourth (22-under par 842) and the Spartans were tied for fifth place with Minnesota.

Graduate students Drew Hackett led Michigan State, tying for 10th place at 8-under par 208 (67-69-72). He posted an even par 72 on Tuesday and closed out his second round at 3-under par 69.

Freshman Lorenzo Pinili and senior Bradley Smithson tied for 22nd place, with each posting scores of 5-under par 211. It was the best finish of his career for Pinili, who posted back-to-back under par rounds at 3-under par 69 and 2-under par 70. Smithson fired a 5-under par 67 in the second round before finishing at 2-over par 74 and finished second among all golfers with 15  birdies.

Junior Ashton McCulloch tied for 34th place at 1-under par 215 (70-74-71) and freshman Lucas Acevedo finished in 67th place at 5-over par 221 (72-75-74).

Playing as an individual, senior August Meekhof tied for 22nd place at 5-under par 211 (69-72-70) and was fifth among all competitors with 38 birdies.

Michigan State is back in action next week, playing in the Johnnie-O at Sea Island at Sea Island Resort in Georgia on Monday, March 11 and Tuesday, March 12.
