Men's Golf Finishes First Day at The Hayt

SAWGRASS, Fla. – The Duke men’s golf is in 11th place following the opening round of The Hayt, held at Sawgrass Country Club. The Blue Devils shot a 17-over, 305, on Saturday, led by Ethan Evans’ 1-over, 73.

HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND ONE

  • With rain and wind persisting throughout the day, only two teams finished under-par. As a team, Duke finished at 17-over, 305, in the opening 18 holes.
  • Ethan Evans was the low Blue Devil, signing for a 1-over, 73, in the opening round. The sophomore played the first nine holes at even-par, bouncing back from dropped shots on holes No. 3, 5 and 6 with birdies on holes No. 2, 4, 7 and 8. Evans closed his round strong with a birdie on the par-5 18th, helping offset two back-nine bogeys.
  • Ian Siebers played steady golf on Saturday, rolling in 12 pars en route to a 2-over, 74. The senior made the turn at 2-over but added birdies on the par-4 13th and par-5 18th to help balance out back-to-back bogeys on holes No. 16 and 17.
  • Bryan Kim carded a 6-over, 78, in the first round. A slow start for the freshman resulted in a 6-over front-nine before an even-par back-nine that consisted of two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 11th.
  • Luke Sample and William Love rounded out Duke’s lineup, with both shooting 8-over, 80.
  • Sample rolled in two birdies during his round, on the par-5 fourth and par-4 14th. Love also sank two birdies, both on the back-nine, on No. 11 and No. 14.
  • Playing individually, Jimmy Zheng signed for a 2-over, 74, and Kelly Chinn recorded a 3-over, 75.
