Fouillet Tied For 1st, Tatematsu In 18th
PHOENIX – Opening the PING/ASU Invitational on Thursday alongside one of the most talented fields it’s competed with all season, the California women’s golf team posted a 3-under-par 285 team score, easily its best round so far this spring.
After placing higher than four programs ranked in the top-15 nationally, the Golden Bears will head into Friday’s second round in fifth place and just four strokes behind first-place No. 13 Arizona State.
Freshman Constance Fouillet (-4; 68) became the first Bear to card a sub-70 score this calendar year, putting away six birdies – four of which came in quick succession as she started hot on the back nine. It was her third round shooting 4-under this season, good for most on the team. She is currently in a four-way tie for first place on the player leaderboard.
Rina Tatematsu also ended the day in the top 20 individually, as she carded a 1-under 71 to tie for 18th place. It was the fourth time she’s shot 1-under or better in her last nine rounds dating back to the fall.
Fellow senior Cristina Ochoa also continued a solid trend of consistent play, shooting an even-par 72. She has now shot par or better in seven of her last nine rounds. Sophomore Adora Liu was the final Bear to contribute to Cal’s score with a 2-over 74, placing her in a tie for 53rd place overall.
The Bears will be back teeing off round two on hole one tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. PT.
