SAN FRANCISCO — The USC men’s golf team fought early cool conditions and finished in a tie for 25th out of 31 teams after the first round of The Goodwin on Thursday (Mar. 28) at Harding Park Golf Course. After a long break following the John A. Burns Invitational in Hawaii, the Trojans concluded their second competitive round in just over a month in a total of 15-over (72+73+75+75=294).
Tournament host Stanford alongside Tennessee and Georgia are the current leaders of the tournament, all tied at 1-under. They sit in front of second place BYU after a tough day of conditions where they were the only three teams that finished under par.
Gavin Aurilia led Trojan during the first round in the Bay. After a birdie on one, Aurilia went on to an even finish after the first nine. With just one birdie on the back, however, he closed out his final round at Harding Park in 2-over (74). Aurilia is currently slotted in a tie for 45th.
USC’s second finisher was the steady Nicolas Dominguez. After a tough first nine, Dominguez found his form on the back making birdie on 13 and the short 16th. He closed his final round out in 3-over (73) and now sits in a tie for 68th.
Sam Lape and Antonio Safa had similar first and second nine scores. Safa went 38 and 37 while Lape finished the front in 37 and the back in 38. The sophomore and the graduate both finished in 5-over (75).
Krando Nishiba, coming off his season low of 64 against Prairie View A&M in the USC Challenge, never found his stride in round one. He finished his first loop of Harding Park at 10-over (80).
The Trojans will play two more rounds with plenty more chances to move up the leaderboard throughout the next two days of competition. USC begins its second round at 12:15pm PST on Friday (Mar. 29).
