Darling’s caddie, Jonathan Burnett, is the father of Darling’s South Carolina teammate, Katie Burnett, and a former Division II golf coach. Their goal on Wednesday was to stick to the plan and play boring golf.

Curtis Cup captain Catriona Matthew, a fellow Scot, was outside the ropes following much of Darling’s round. Darling called the major champion and two-time Solheim Cup captain a role model for all Scottish amateurs.

Darling’s first call after talking to the media was to her longtime coach, Ian Muir, director of golf at the University of St. Andrews. Muir was on the bag when she won the St. Rule Trophy at the Old Course three years ago.

“The last tee shot is the widest fairway in golf, and I just about missed it,” she said. “It’s such a special walk, I think both of us almost teared up.”

Darling, however, won’t allow herself think about what a walk like that up the 18th at Augusta National on Saturday might feel like.
