PHOENIX – The Washington men’s golf team got off to a tough start and despite rebounding at the end of the first round, struggled through the second round of play Friday at the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Course.

Shooting 14-over par in the second round, Washington finds itself second from the bottom on the team leaderboard.

“Tough day for the Huskies,” head coach Alan Murray said. “If you turned the leaderboard upside down we would be in great shape but we just didn’t have our best stuff at all.”

The day got off to a tumultuous start for the Dawgs, finding themselves seven-over through just two holes.

Kicking off a strong back nine in round one, Taehoon Song fired in an eagle on hole No. 1 as part of a four-under close. Teddy Lin and Finn Koelle each mixed in two birdies as the Huskies fought back to salvage an even-par round.

“We got off to a tough start this morning and the guys did a great job of battling back to shoot an even par round in round one,” Murray said. “We just got on the bogey train in round two and couldn’t get off it.”

Playing 36 continuous holes on the day, the Dawgs couldn’t keep the momentum going into the second round. All five Huskies shot over par for the round, with Petr Hruby and Koelle leading the group at four-over for the day, tied for 61st.

“We had a good talk after the round and I think we will use the pain of today to help us moving forward,” Murray finished. “We’ll look forward to tomorrow’s round and see if we can claw back some strokes.”

While the remaining teams finish their second rounds in the morning, round three will begin simultaneously. Bo Peng will get things started for UW, teeing off from hole No. 10 at 8:42 a.m. PT.
