Men Tied for 10th After First Round of The Thunderbird


PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 12, 2024) – Washington State men’s golf wrapped up the first round of The Thunderbird in a tie for 10th place among the 17-team field with a one-round score of 1-under, 283.

Teams were able to get most of the way through the second round of play before night fall on Friday, and will finish the round on Saturday morning before start of round three.

Sophomore Sam Renner wrapped up the first round at 2-under, 69 to finish in a tie for 15th place. He birdied hole two and parred the rest of the front nine to sit 1-under at the turn before two more birdies on the back nine and a bogey on 15 led to a 2-under, 69.

Senior Preston Bebich ended day one tied for 23rd place at 1-under, 70. He birdied his first hole of the day and added two more over the next eight holes to go 2-under before recording two more birdies and a pair of bogeys on the back end to wrap up the first round.

Fifth year Pono Yanagi finished round one in a tie for 39th at an even 71. He birdied holes two and seven between three bogeys for a 1-under front nine, but two more birdies to just one bogey the rest of the first round put him even.

Redshirt freshman Ben Borgida is currently placed tied for 61st at 2-over, 73. He birdied a pair in his opening round along with two bogeys and a double-bogey for his round-one score of 73.

Senior Drayton Joseph also wrapped up day one of The Thunderbird at 2-over, 73 tied for 61st. He got out to a strong start with birdies on two of his first three holes before adding one more on hole nine to make the turn at 2-under, before four bogeys on the back nine put him at 2-over.

The Cougars will finish up at The Thunderbird hosted by Arizona State on April 13 at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
