SYLVANIA, Ohio – A trio of Fighting Illini upperclassmen opened action as individuals competitors at the Highland Meadow Intercollegiate on Monday, with Piercen Hunt and Jerry Ji in position to contend heading into Tuesday’s finale, and Timmy Crawford in the hunt for a top-20 finish.
Hunt is 7-under after 36 holes where he sits in a tie for second place behind Minnesota’s Ben Warian (-14). The senior from Hartland, Wis., opened with a 68 (-3) in Round 1, offsetting a pair of bogeys with five birdies in his morning round. As play continued into the afternoon, Hunt posted six birdies to overcome another pair of bogeys and card a 67 (-4).
Ji, a fifth-year senior from Hoofddorp, Netherlands, is just one stroke behind Hunt at 6-under in a tie for fourth heading into Round 3. Ji carded five birdies and one bogey to finish with a 67 (-4) in Round 1 before posting a 69 (-2) in Round 2 with three birdies and one bogey.
Crawford, a fifth-year transfer from Loyola Chicago, is 1-over in a tie for 21st in the 75-player field. After a 3-over start through his first four holes, he steadied himself to shoot even-par over his final 13 holes in Round 1. Crawford then carded a 2-under 69 in Round 2 to move one shot outside of the top 20.
