SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Finishing hot on the back nine, Washington shot up the leaderboard late in Monday’s opening round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiemp Golf Club.

The top two spots on the leaderboards belong to Huskies, with Taehoon Song sitting at the top at four-under and Petr Hruby tying with two others one shot back.

“Those were awesome rounds by Petr and Taehoon,” head coach Alan Murray said. “They really showed their class and importance to the team. Four of our guys were really disappointed with how they played so to have our lead horses bail us out like that has given us a chance in this tournament.”

As a team, Washington is seven-shots back of leading Arizona, but just a single shot behind Stanford for second. Much of the Dawgs’ success came thanks to a strong finish to the round.

Of Washington’s five counters, the Huskies closed the final four holes seven-under, with just one bogey.

Song birdied three of the final four holes to take command of the leaderboard, while Hruby finished birdie-eagle to move just a single shot back.

Putting a slight shine on an overall tough round, Finn Koelle also birdied 18, finish four-over. Koelle is tied for 50th with a pair of other Dawgs in Bo Peng and Teddy Lin, who also struggled to find consistency on the day.

After toughing out a tumultuous front nine, Drew Warford recovered to shoot one-over on the back half, finishing seven over to round out UW’s counters. Meanwhile, freshman Justin Bai struggled over the final nine holes and is one shot back of Warford.

“We need Bo, Finn, Teddy and Justin to pick up the slack tomorrow if we want to contend in this tournament,” Murray said. “This tournament tests your depth and you need all your guys to be tuned in to compete.”

Washington will tee off round two of the Western Intercollegiate at 12:04 p.m. PT. Live coverage will be available on the Golf Channel and Peacock beginning at 4 p.m.
