Ashton McCulloch Named Second Team All-Big Ten

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State junior men’s golfer Ashton McCulloch was named to the All-Big Ten Conference Second Team in a vote of the league’s coaches, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

McCulloch was one of two Spartans recognized by the league as senior Brad Smithson was the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

The junior has been Michigan State’s top golfer this season and was named to the All-Big Ten Championship team after tying for third place at last weekend’s league event at 5-over par 215 to lead the Spartans to a fourth-place finish.

McCulloch, who won the Canadian Amateur last summer, leads the team with a 70.97 scoring average over 33 rounds this year. He won the Johnnie-O at Sea Island on March 12, firing a 12-under par 204 for his first collegiate win.

McCulloch’s 70.97 scoring average ranks as the best single-season mark in program history, ahead of James Piot’s mark of 71.33, set in 2021.

Overall this year, McCulloch has been the team’s top finisher in eight events, including the last five during the spring season. He has four top-5 finishes, six among the top-10 and eight among the top-20 in 12 tournaments. In addition, he leads the team in rounds counted at 98.4 percent, counting toward the team total in 31.5 rounds out of 32.

For his career, McCulloch carries a 71.79 scoring average currently stands as the top mark in program history for a player with a minimum of 50 rounds played, topping the mark of former U.S. Amateur winner James Piot, who finished his career with a 71.99 average.

The Spartans have seven top-five team finishes this year, including six-straight during the spring season, and are ranked No. 68 in the country in the latest NCAA Rankings.

The selections for the Division I NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals will be held on Wednesday, May 1 on The Golf Channel at 2 p.m.
