East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot an even-par 280 in the first round and neared completion of the second round when play was suspended due to darkness at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, being played at Finley Golf Course in North Carolina.
The Spartans are in 10th place at 2-over par in the field of 13 teams.
East Tennessee State leads the field at 21-under par, with Clemson in second place at 18-under par, host North Carolina third at 13-under par, Baylor in fourth (11-under par) and Long Beach State and Georgia Tech are tied for fifth place (10-under par).
Due to inclement weather expected in the area this week, the teams began the second round on Monday afternoon and seven of the 25 groups completed the second round. Play will continue on Tuesday.
The Chapel Hill Regional is one of six regionals being held nationally, with 81 teams competing. The top five teams from each regional will then advance to the NCAA Championships in Carlsbad, Calif.
The Spartans are making their seventh NCAA Regional appearance in the last nine years. Michigan State is seeded No. 11 in the regional and were one of 13 teams selected to compete at Finley Golf Club on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
Senior August Meekhof is the leader for Michigan State, tied for 20th place at 2-under par. Meekhof fired a 2-under par 68 in the opening round and was at even-par par the second round with three holes to play.
Junior Ashton McCulloch is tied for 24th place at 1-under par, one shot back from Meekhof. McCulloch opened with a 1-under par 69 in the first round and was at even par with three holes left to play.
Graduate Bradley Smithson are freshman Lorenzo Pinili are tied for 43rd place at 3-over par. Smithson shot a 1-over par 71 in the first round and a 2-over par 72 in the second round. Pinili posted a 2-over par 72 in the opening round and a 1-over par 71 in the second round.
Freshman Lucas Acevedo was substituted into the lineup in the second round and finished with a 1-over par 71, including six birdies.
The Spartans took a hit early in the first round when graduate Drew Hackett, who has been battling an injury, was forced to withdraw.
