Arizona State is one of seven teams within eight shots of the lead at the Rancho Santa Fe Men’s Golf NCAA Regional held at The Farms Golf Club after the second round Tuesday, with the final 18 coming Wednesday.

ASU (11-over 571) shot 5-over 285 Tuesday, and will need to pass two of the teams ahead of it to make the 30-team NCAA Tournament field. 

 

North Florida leads the way at 3-over 563, while ASU is three shots behind Oklahoma (fifth at 8-over 568) and and two shots back of WCC champion and host San Diego (sixth at 9-over 569).

 

Ryggs Johnston fired the first par or better round for ASU with a 1-under 69 on Tuesday, as he sits at tied for 14th at 2-over 142 (73-69). Both Josele Ballester and Connor Williams are tied for 17th at 3-over 143 (71-72).

ASU will tee with Washington and South Florida starting at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday in the final round.

THE FORMAT

Six 54-hole regional tournaments are conducted May 13-15. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. Texas is the host institution for the 2024 championships.

REGIONAL ALWAYS TOUGH

NCAA golf regional action annually is a time when several possible championship contenders don’t make it through to NCAA Championships. The following note puts into perspective how difficult it is to advance…eight of the Top-30 Golfstat teams did not make the cut in 2023: #7 Auburn, #8 Oregon, #11 Arizona, #19 UCF, #20 Iowa State, #21 Florida, #23 Ohio State and #29 Kentucky.
