AUSTIN, Texas – Virginia Tech men’s golfer Kobe Valociek fired an 8-over 221 (72-78-71) to tie for 46th at the NCAA Austin Regional, which concluded Wednesday at The University of Texas Golf Club (par 71, 7,399 yards).
The Peoria, Arizona, native logged seven birdies over his 54 holes, including three in his final round that led to an even-par 71. Christian Maas of Texas carded a 9-under 204 (71-67-66) to claim medalist honors at the three-day regional, one shot clear of teammate Nathan Petronzio. UNCG’s Kelvin Hernandez was the top individual on a non-advancing team by tallying a 6-under 207 (67-72-68), which secured his spot at the national championship May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California.
Texas (-27), Tennessee (-11), Notre Dame (-6) and Utah (-2) earned four of the five spots up for grabs in the team race to La Costa and the national championship. A playoff between Wake Forest and BYU, which both finished at 2-over, was needed to decide the fifth spot. Wake claimed the fifth and final team spot by posting a combined score of 20 (1-under), while BYU recorded a combined score of 21 (even-par) in the one-hole playoff (played simultaneously on holes 10-14).
