CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Isabel Sy has been named a Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Honorable Mention All-American, the organization announced today.
Sy becomes the third student-athlete in program history to earn All-American honors, joining her head coach Renee Slone (’91, ’92, ’93) and Crystal Wang (’23).
“We are very excited for Isabel to be recognized as an All-American by the WGCA for her outstanding performance this season,” Slone said. “It has been a joy to assist her during these four years of growth and development. Her maturity, resolve and consistent commitment to her core principles have been key components to her success.”
The San Gabriel, Calif., native, put together the best season of her storied Illini career, turning in back-to-back co-champion performances at The Chevron Collegiate (Feb. 26-27) and the Briar’s Creek Invitational (March 11-12). Sy became the first golfer in program history to earn individual medalist honors in consecutive tournaments since Slone did so during the 1992-93 season. She is also the seventh golfer in program history to earn multiple individual medalist honors in a single season.
Those tournaments also capped off a run of six-straight top-four finishes by Sy, the first golfer in program history to have such a streak since a run of seven-straight such finishes by Slone, also during the 1992-93 campaign.
Sy finished tied for seventh at the Big Ten Championships, her second-straight top 10 finish at the conference tournament, which earned her a spot at the NCAA East Lansing Regional as the top-seeded individual golfer.
Sy turned in a scoring average of 71.36 during her senior season, by scoring par or better in 23 of 36 rounds, which is second-lowest mark in program history. She finishes her Illini career with a 73.19 scoring average, third-lowest in program history, just .01 strokes behind Kornkamol Sukaree (2018-22) for second.
