Lydia Ko, the only golfer with two Olympic medals, is in prime position to collect at third after a 5-under 67. The Kiwi, who won silver in 2016 and bronze in 2021, sits alone in third, three shots behind. A victory this week would complete her medal set and put Ko in the LPGA Hall of Fame. Two years ago, the LPGA Hall of Fame criteria changed to award one point for a gold medal.
“Honestly this golf course is so hard,” said Ko. “It’s hard to think about the other things because I’m just trying to shoot the best score I can around here.”
“I said earlier in the week, I think this is the toughest golf course we’ve played in the past three Games, and all of them had very different characteristics. But this one, you could shoot a really low score if you’re on, but at the same time it can get away from you, as well.”
China’s Ruoning Yin sits just below Metraux at 7 under after a flawless 65. Yin, who suffered a wrist injury earlier this year, skipped the last major championship in France to rest up for the Olympics. She won her last start, at the Dow Championship, with teammate Atthaya Thitikul.
“On the first hole, my initial thought was I just want to make a revenge there,” said Yin, who bogeyed the first hole yesterday but opened with three straight birdies today. “It was pretty good. I hit a really good putt and I just can’t see the line perfectly, and then just see the ball go into the hole was pretty good.”
