Virginia Athletics | Chang and James Advance to Match Play at US Amateur

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s golfers Ben James and Paul Chang advanced to match play following the second round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club and the Chaska Town Course in Chaska, Minn. It marks the second consecutive year the two Cavaliers have advanced to match play.

Chang, who was the co-leader in stroke play following Monday’s opening round, tied for third place at 7-under 135. James tied for 12th-place at 4-under 138. UVA’s Bryan Lee and Deven Patel both finished at 3-over, 145 and did not advance.

Last year Chang advanced to the round of 16 and James made it to the quarterfinals. In 2022, James placed ninth in stroke play and reached the Round of 32 in match play. He also played in the 2020 event but failed to make the cut during stroke play.

This marked the third consecutive year UVA has had at least three players in the field.

The U.S. Amateur will be broadcast on Peacock and Golf Channel starting Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. ET.

Complete tournament coverage is available at the USGA website.
