Men's Golf in First as They Head to Final Round at Sahalee


SAMMAMISH, Wash. – A great first day of the first tournament of the year as the Arizona State men’s golf team sits in first place heading into final round Sunday of the Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club. 

The Sun Devils are currently first at 10-under 566 (282-284) in front of Pepperdine who currently sit at 5-under 571 (284-287). ASU leads the field with 39 birdies and the best scoring average on the par 5’s at 16-under.

The defending individual champion, Preston Summerhays, tops the leaderboard after going 6-under 139 (71-67) through two rounds. The senior finished his first round 1-under par and fired six birdies in round two to clinch the number one spot heading into Sunday. Summerhays also has 12 birdies through two rounds, three more than the second highest competitor.

Freshman Peer Wernicke made strides in his first tournament as a Sun Devil. Wernicke sits tied for seventh at 2-under with nine birdies between rounds one and two. U.S. Amateur Champion, Josele Ballester, is tied for second at 3-under for the day. Sophomore Connor Williams an eagle for the Sun Devils in round two 

The Sun Devils will start their final round at Sahalee Country Club Sunday at 7:45 a.m.
