CHARLESTON, S.C. — Junior Nicha Kanpai of the Maryland women’s golf team picked up the second individual win of her collegiate career Tuesday as she won the Cougar Classic at the Yeaman’s Hall Golf Club in Charleston, S.C.
Kanpai tied her career-low 66 in the third and final round Tuesday to secure the victory. She finished with a score of 206 (70-70-66), which was -7 overall. She made eight birdies in Tuesday’s final round to go -5.
Last year, Kanpai tied to win the Chevron Collegiate last spring with a score of 204.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Chananyu Chowiwattana finished in 26th with a +3 score of 216 (72-68-76).
Senior Panassaya Somchit finished in 53rd with a score of 222 (75-70-77). Graduate student Karla Elena Vazquez Setzer shot a 229 (78-74-77) and sophomore Julia Garcia finished with a score of 230 (77-80-73).
As a team, the Terrapins tied with Tennessee for ninth of 17 teams competing with their score of 868 (294-282-292), which was +16 overall.
Next, the Terrapins will compete in the Cavalier Regional Preview Sept. 23-24 in Charlottesville, Va.
