PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State junior Sam Renner first a final-round score of 5-under 66 to help Cougar Men’s Golf to a fourth-place finish at the season-opening Palouse Collegiate, Wednesday at the 7,302-yard, par 71 Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
As a team, the Cougars posted a third-round score of 8-under, 276 and finished the tournament at 24-under for the three rounds, fourth overall. Utah captured the tournament title as it finished at 52-under par, 18 strokes ahead of Colorado and 24 strokes better than Oregon State.
Renner posted six birdies on his round against one bogey, including four birdies as part of a 31 on the back nine to lead all Cougar golfers. Renner, who also shot a 66 in Tuesday’s first round, finished the 54-hole event at 8-under, 205 and tied for 12th.
Redshirt-sophomore Ben Borgida ended his Palouse Collegiate with a 1-under, 70, completing the three-round event at 5-under, 208, placing him tied for 23rd. Borgida posted birdies on two of his final four holes to record par-or-better in all three rounds. Freshman Dylan Burcham, who entered Wednesday at even-par, posted a 4-under 67 to shoot up the leader board and finish at 209, tied for 25th overall. Burcham’s round featured three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 18th to close his round.
Senior Franklin Lydra, who entered the day at 6-under, struggled in the damp conditions as he fired a 2-over 73, giving him a three-round score of 4-under, 209, finishing tied with Burcham at 25th overall. Freshman Garrett Harrison completed his first collegiate event at 2-over, 215, after shooting a 3-over, 74, Wednesday. Harrison finished tied for 54th.
WSU also had three individuals competing at the event. Fifth-year senior Drayton Joseph ended with his best round of the tournament, shooting a 4-under 67, a round that featured six birdies against two bogeys. Joseph ended the event a 4-under, 209, tied for 25th. Grad transfer Jakob Chicoyne ended his first event as a Coug with an even-par round of 72, finished the 54-hole tournament at 1-under, 212, and tied for 38th. Freshman Tate Bruggeman posted a 1-over 72 to finish his tournament at 4-over, 217, and tied for 68th.
The Cougars are next in action Sept. 16-17 at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational in Toronto, Canada.
